impulse-momentum

This week we are going over the concept of the impulse-momentum theorem and using it to make sure that we have a successful egg drop.  The impulse-momentum theorem is used for more than just dropping eggs though.
In class we discussed how the air bag in a car uses the impulse-momentum theorem so that the change in momentum happens over a longer period of time for the person in the car.  This lessens the force that is exerted on the person in the car, hopefully decreasing their injuries.
What is another way the impulse-momentum theorem is used in a real world application?  Remember you must post an original comment and comment on someone else's post.  As always your post is due by Sunday at 10 pm.  Keep it clean and have fun:)

  1. When you get something in the mail they either put bubble wrap or packaging peanuts inside the box when the item inside is fragile so that it lessens the chances of the item breaking.

    1. I wouldn't have thought about that being an example, but that works.

  2. During football season when one player runs into another player, could be an example of the impulse momentum theorem. One player causing force that will last so long will cause a change in momentum.

  3. In Bumper Carts it has a tire like ring aroung the car so it lessens the impact when you hit someone with the bumper cars so its fun and you bounce back instead of crashing and hurting.

    1. I never would have thought of this. Smart example.

  4. In Soccer goalies have to wear gloves because when the opponent player shoots the ball towards them it is going at a quick velocity so when the goalie tries to block it the gloves will help protect their fingers from getting injured (yes it's possible). So the gloves serve as protection.

    1. I fully agree with Lorena because the cushion in the goalie gloves makes the impact take longer to get to your actual finger making the force less and hopefully the pain of the shot much less.

    2. That's a Great Example on How The impulse-momentum theorem is used in the real world. The Gloves Does Take Out A Lot Of impact Force Off The Golies Hand.

  5. Race car drivers wear helmets incase they crash and hit their head. The impact on their actual skull will be less with the helmet on because the steering wheel will hit the helmet first increasing the time of impact . Therefore lessening the force of the impact.

    1. i agree if they were to crash the head injuries would be life threatening if it weren't for the helmet which lessens the injury.

  6. When Playing Baseball, Catchers Use Gloves To Decrease The Force Of the Impact iN Which The Ball Will Hit the Hand. This is Another way the impulse-momentum theorem is used in the Real world.

  8. An example will be a man pushing another man because man with the greater force will cause the other to move will the man with greater force will stop.
